What is reading Recovery?
Reading Recovery is a short-term intervention designed for first grade children, who are among the lowest achieving in literacy. The intervention involves intensive one-to-one lessons for 30 minutes a day with a trained literacy teacher. The intervention lasts for 12-20 weeks.
A Reading Recovery® lesson is a special time for your child to work on reading and writing. There are 6 parts to a typical 30-minute lesson.
2. Running Record
Students reread the new book that they read yesterday. The teacher records a running record of the reading, paying attention to strategies used while reading. If the student can’t figure out a word, the teacher will say the word or say, “Try that again.” After the reading, the teacher chooses a powerful teaching point to move the child forward. |
4. Writing a Story
Students write in their own journal about the stories they read. The teacher helps the child use boxes to write new words, saying the words slowly to hear the sounds in the word while writing. We practice using a capital letter at the beginning of the story, leaving spaces, and using punctuation. Opportunities are provided for the child to hear and record sounds in words and take words to fluency. |
